Nakagin Capsule Tower – a now-demolished residential and office building designed by Kisho Kurokawa. It was a prime example of metabolist architecture. The building was constructed in 1972 in just 30 days as the first building in the world with interchangeable modules. It consisted of one hundred and forty modules ("capsules") arranged on thirteen floors. Each module, measuring 2.5m × 4.0m, served as a self-contained living or office space for one person. Over time, the building's deteriorating condition, caused by a lack of maintenance, led to its demolition in 2022. Only 23 capsules were preserved, one of which was purchased by the Museum of Modern Art in San Francisco.
